What should I do if I am involved in an auto accident?
- Exchange insurance information with the other party.
- Identify and get names and phone numbers of potential witnesses.
- Write down an account of what happened while matters are clear in your mind.
If I am involved in an accident, and my vehicle sustained minor or no damages, do I have to report this to my insurance company?
Yes, all automobile accidents must be reported promptly to your insurance company, as it is a requirement under your automobile policy.
How much time do I have to conclude my claim?
In British Columbia claims are limited to two years from the date of the occurrence. In Alberta claims are limited to one year from the date of the occurence.
Is mechanical breakdown or wear and tear covered?
No. Your insurance policy is not a maintenance contract. You are responsible to maintain your property or automobile.
Does my deductible apply even when I am not at fault for an accident?
The only time that your deductible does not apply is when the responsible person's insurance company commits to pay the deductible on your behalf.
Are personal possessions stolen from an automobile covered under my automobile policy?
No. Your automobile policy only covers the vehicle and its equipment. You should report this to your home, condominium or tenant insurers.
