Collision Avoidance Course - FAQs
Why should I take this course?
Each year in BC, over 400 people are killed in vehicle collisions. Statistics suggest that you will be involved in one of these crashes within the next 5 years. This course could help you avoid being one of these statistics. With more and more traffic on the roads everyday, it's time to learn how to avoid "the other driver". And, as a bonus, you can save money on your collision insurance premiums with Canadian Direct.
Whose car do I use?
Yours. The objective of the course is for you to learn the limits of - and how to avoid collisions in - your car, not someone else's.
What will this do to my car?
There will be no measurable wear to any component of your car, even though you will drive a little more aggressively than you normally would.
Can I use a pick-up truck/van/jeep for this course?
Yes. This course is designed for all types of vehicles. We recommend that you use the vehicle you drive most often.
What happens if it rains?
Great! The course runs in all types of weather, just like the conditions you drive in. (Even though you will spend most of the course in your car, you might want to bring appropriate clothing to deal with the weather.)
Can a 16 year-old participate in this program with just a learner's permit?
Everyone with a valid drivers license can participate in the course. Provincial licensing restrictions apply - an adult can ride with the 16 year-old with a learner's licence. However, this is not the place for a new driver to learn the basics of driving. If you are looking for basic driver training, check out the Driving Unlimited Academy.
What happens in the level I course?
The course starts with a 45 minute classroom session. The remainder of the course is spent behind the wheel experiencing four driving exercises.
-
Emergency Braking Exercise
Practice stopping as quickly as possible with or without Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS).
-
Braking On A Turn Exercise
We simulate having to panic stop to avoid an obstacle while negotiating a corner.
-
Slalom Exercise
Experience the importance of looking farther ahead, looking where you want to go, and proper steering techniques.
-
Collision Avoidance Exercise
Put all the previous techniques together to practice avoiding collisions.
